Moonspan Privacy Policy
This policy covers the Moonspan app for iPhone, built by Swapnanil Dhol.
Summary
Moonspan does not require an account. Every phase, eclipse, and rise/set calculation runs on your device from published astronomical tables — no astronomy data is fetched from a server. Location, your Moon Log, and Apple Health data stay on your device. A few things do leave the device: city search, purchase verification, app analytics, optional Apple Intelligence summaries, and anything you send us as feedback.
Location
If you choose to use your current location, Moonspan asks Core Location for a one-time, approximate fix (about 3 km) to work out the Moon’s sky position, rise, and set for where you are. That location is stored only on your device (and in your App Group, so widgets and Shortcuts can show it) and is never sent to our servers. You can use a saved city instead of current location at any time.
Searching for a city uses Apple’s MapKit, so your search text is sent to Apple to find matching places. We don’t receive it. Saved cities you’ve already added don’t need a search and work offline.
Moon Log
Moon Log entries — your notes, the auto-filled lunar and sky context, and any photos you attach — are stored only in a local database and photo files on your device. They are not synced to iCloud and are never sent anywhere.
Health
Two Moon Log settings are off by default and independent of each other. “Save mood to Apple Health” writes how you say a night felt as a State of Mind entry in Health, only when you turn it on. “Show sleep from Apple Health” reads last night’s sleep duration to show as context in the entry, only when you turn it on. Both work entirely on-device through Apple’s HealthKit — Health data is never sent to our servers, to analytics, or used for advertising. Turning a setting off, or never turning it on, means Moonspan never touches Health.
Journaling Suggestions
“Add from Journaling Suggestions” in the Moon Log editor opens Apple’s own suggestions picker. Moonspan only receives the specific photo or place you pick — it never sees your broader Journaling Suggestions history, and it has no way to write anything back to the Journal app.
Apple Intelligence
Tonight’s Brief and Moon Log reflection prompts are optional written summaries, on by default, that you can turn off in Settings. Tonight’s Brief sends Moonspan’s own already-computed facts for your selected place and date — phase, rise/set times, viewing windows, and the city name, never your Moon Log notes — to Apple’s on-device model, or, only when that model isn’t ready, to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. Moon Log reflection prompts read your note to suggest a starting sentence, and always run on-device — never Private Cloud Compute, and never sent to us.
Purchases
Moonspan Pro subscriptions and purchases are processed by Apple. We use RevenueCat to verify purchase and entitlement status using an anonymous subscriber ID. We never receive your payment details.
Analytics
Moonspan uses Mixpanel to understand which features are used and to find problems. Events are tied to the same anonymous subscriber ID RevenueCat uses, along with device model, OS version, and locale — never your location, Moon Log notes, or Health data.
Feedback
If you send feedback from Settings, we receive your message, an anonymous installation ID, your subscriber ID, and basic app/device context, plus your name, email, or a photo only if you choose to include them. We use this only to respond and to fix problems.
Children
Moonspan is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Your choices
You can delete Moon Log entries and saved cities at any time in the app, and turn off location, Health, or Apple Intelligence access in Settings or iOS Settings. Deleting the app removes its local data, including your Moon Log. To ask about or delete any feedback you sent, email us.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top.
